Adina Admires: Anita Devlin

I met Anita when I was looking for a new apartment. She was the tenant in this really cool luxury loft in the financial district. I randomly went to see it and Anita struck up a conversation with me. I was living in the Upper West Side and wanted a change. Anita was in the same situation. Believe it or not we ended up swapping apartments. That was more than 12 years ago. Anita went from complete stranger to life long friend. Anita is an amazing person. She was working for many years in Real Estate and also as a film producer. Then her family, which I can tell you for sure are most important in her life, had a crisis. Her son became addicted to drugs and her life changed forever. Anita and her son wrote this incredible book S.O.B.E.R about their experience, which is now being made into a film. She has made her life’s work about raising awareness and helping other families. We all go through hard times and these inspiring stories of people that make it out of darkness are so needed. I admire Anita for having the courage to tell her story.

WHY WE WROTE SOBER:

WE WROTE S.O.B.E.R.* TOGETHER TO SHOW THAT NO MATTER HOW BAD THINGS MAY SEEM THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE IF YOU HOLD ON TO FAITH.  IT IS AN ACRONYM FOR SON OF A BITCH EVERYTHING’S REAL.  ONCE YOU SURRENDER AND GIVE UP THE DENIAL YOU CAN FIGHT THROUGH TO ACCOMPLISH WHATEVER YOU NEED TO.

WE SHOW THE DIFFERENT SIDES OF A FAMILY BATTLING A CHILDS ADDICTION AND HOW TO JOIN FORCES TO ACHIEVE RECOVERY.  NO ONE IS IMMUNE AND ADDICTION THRIVES IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF IGNORANCE AND FEEDS OFF OF DENIAL.  WE TRY TO SHOW HOW WE EDUCATED OURSELVES AND FOUGHT THIS HIDEOUS BEAST TOGETHER AS A FAMILY

INSPRIRING STORY:

BEING THE DAUGHTER OF A GREEK ORTHODOX PRIEST AND SPEAKING ABOUT ADDICTION OUT LOUD IS SHOCKING TO SOME PEOPLE.  ON THE OTHER HAND, I HAVE RECEIVED HUNDREDS OF EMAILS AND LETTERS FROM MOTHERS ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT SHOW ME HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO KEEP ADVOCATING AND TELLING OUR STORY OUT LOUD.  ONE LETTER I RECEIVED FROM THE WIFE OF A PRIEST WAS SO POWERFUL THAT I USE IT A LOT WHEN I SPEAK.  SHE THANKED ME FOR GIVING HER PERMISSION TO LIVE LOVE AND LAUGH AGAIN.  SHE WROTE ABOUT THE JUDGEMENT IN HER OWN CHURCH AND HOW SHE KEPT A SECRET ABOUT HER OWN SONS FOR TEN YEARS UNTIL SHE READ MY BOOK.

THIS IS WHY I DO WHAT I DO.  IN THE END, IF YOU STAY SILENT AND DON’T REACH OUT FOR HELP BECAUSE OF SHAME OR JUDGEMENT, CHANCES ARE THAT A CHILD WILL DIE.  AND IN THE END ITS NOT THE ADDICT THAT DIES.  IT IS OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS THAT DIE.

Adina Admires: John Angeilli

I met Jonathan over 10 years ago when I sold him an apartment in the Village. Meeting great people is one of the perks of Real Estate. I’ve met a lot of people over the years as you can imagine. But Jonathan really struck me. He is a warrior and a bad ass with one of the biggest hearts of anyone I have ever met. He wears his heart on his sleeve out there for everyone to see. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever met and I am honored to feature him on my blog Adina Admires.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

This Life Crazy!

What does being a ninja mean to you and can anyone aspire to become a ninja?

To me, a ninja is anyone who is committed to living life with great skill. This takes a lot of awareness and courage!

It is a dedication to manifesting one’s own personal greatness through movement. How we move our body shapes how we move through life and the thoughts that move through our head; it is a deeply holistic path.

The ninja’s of history evolved in a very mountainous landscape and had to develop tremendous spiritual power and survival skills to thrive in such an inhospitable landscape.

Thus, in my humble opinion, anyone can be a ninja if they are willing to embrace obstacles (both internal and external) as opportunities for growth.

I know you get phone calls and emails all the time from people looking for guidance and support. Can you share one inspiring story that made you feel that it’s all worth it?

Actually, sometimes I don’t find out about the client’s issues until afterwards! Once I worked with a client for 2 years, and then right before she stopped training with me to move out of town, she dropped a bombshell. She said, “By the way, I’ve been sober for the last 12 months thanks to your coaching.” I honestly hadn’t even known she was an alcoholic! She’s still sober 8 years later. It’s so hard for people to admit they have a problem in the first place, yet doing just that is profoundly empowering.

Food addiction is also a huge issue with many of my students (and most New Yorkers, frankly). It’s often sugar, sometimes it’s grains and dairy or processed foods, but there are many, many people out there using food to medicate themselves. Food can be wonderful medicine, of course, but not when it’s compulsively used as a quick fix to avoid feeling other negative emotions or to relieve emotional stress from work.

Often, what we’re hungry for has nothing to do with food; we’re starved for meaning in life, deep personal satisfaction, joy, and interpersonal connection. No amount of food can satisfy this hunger. And admitting that we are starved in these other areas is very painful for many people. Yet on the other side of that psychological pain is true food freedom.

I’ve been having outstanding results with food addicts by combining the “Whole 30” food cleanse with primal movement. The food cleanse helps people chemically detox and become aware of their unconscious food habits. And then the primal movement, especially rocking and twisting, help mechanically detox the inflammation in the digestive system, literally wringing out the toxins and releasing endorphins at the same time. They are very “nourishing movements” for body, brain, and mind, and feel great.

What role has spirituality played in your decision to help others heal through tness your life’s work?

Spirituality has played a huge role in my self-transformation, and meditation in particular was crucial to my self-rescue. I’ve studied many kinds of meditation, and teach all of my students the version that most ts their predisposition because it’s vital to the process.

Adina Admires: Larendee Roos

The thing I admire the most about Larendee is her power. She is one powerful woman.

She is nurturing and very kind but also very strong willed and smart. She is unapologetically real. There is nothing fake about Larendee, only a courageous wise woman that shows up for you consistently every time. I love that about her. I personally work with Larendee as my business strategist. Working with Larendee has given me a lot of insight. One of the most powerful lessons I have learned from her is that when faced with problems there is always a path to a solution if you choose to see it and trust that your inner wisdom will guide the way.

If you could learn to do anything what would it be?
Figure out a way to retain all of the information that I have learned. I love learning and I wished I could remember it all and call it forth immediately. It would be so helpful.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?
She Found Rest

Let’s imagine you have been invited to speak in front of thousands of people and it will be recorded and could potentially reach millions. Topic of your choice. What would be your message?
Never Give Up. Everything you need to know to create an amazing life filled with purpose and passion IS within you. Don’t look at the outside circumstances as your guidepost. All you need is a little willingness to remember the truth of your magnitude and ability to create. The magnitude is within you. That willingness will be met by the Creator with opportunities to show you every step of the way your next light (love first, inspired, grateful, honest, truthful) moves.

I know you have been a solid mentor to many people over the years. Who is one of your most valued mentors and what was their lesson to you?

I will always be eternally grateful to my dad first who taught me that there is nothing that grace and mercy can’t repair.

2nd in business-Ken Woolley. He taught me how to lead people with compassion and inspiration. He taught me the fundamentals of business and real estate. He gave me a platform that was truly the launching point of everything I teach and who I am in business today. He taught me that you make money in real estate when you buy. In investing they say you make money when you open a trade. I have used that numerous times to remember that the wealth of opportunity is placed in the right beginnings. That’s the tricky part. All of the misperceptions or “errors” I have made in life and business has been when I didn’t carefully see things for what they really were at the beginning.

You are in business as a strategic business consultant and you have a recovery miracles program. You are a mentor and trusted advisor. You’re a wife, a mother, a best friend to many. How do balance it all?

I’m not sure I really believe in balance. I believe in the beautiful web of life. And life is what you make of it in the moment. Most days, I truly do live moment by moment.

I have the best power room anyone could ever desire. I have an amazing supportive husband, who is also my best friend. We have been through a lot that has tested our commitment to one another. Because we have worked through so much, there is literally no one I trust more. I have few great spiritual advisors. I have a great team at work. I have the best children any mom could hope for me who raised me. I have some daily habits that keep me centered and focused. And most of all I wake up every day and say the following from A Course In Miracles.

Spirit show me where to go, who to speak to, what to say and what to do.

I practice, practice, practice and TRUST the process and answers come with ease and flow.

This is truly miraculous because even though I have always been connected to a Higher Power since the age of 4 (yes I remember my awakening), there were many times along the way when my Ego mind wanted to steer the ship. Those waters were not easy.

Following the stream of light and guidance is the only way for me to live my life now. For me, there is no other way.
